What people with IBD should know

I am often asked, “What would you tell someone recently diagnosed with IBD?” So, this is what I think you should know! Look out for clickable links in this blog, leading to more detailed information! For many, a definitive diagnosis is a massive relief after a long period of being unwell. This does not mean that acceptance is easy, after all, you have just been diagnosed with a chronic disease which has no cure. Do NOT panic, we’ve got this, life is not over! It is worth pointing out that no two IBD patients’ lives are the same. The disease does not always manifest in the same way, and the fact that a treatment works for one person does not mean it will work for another. This makes IBD notoriously difficult to treat. That said, some IBD patients may have one flare, find the right medication straight away and never have another, and that is fantastic! How I felt when I found out that I needed a stoma

So, you’ve just been told you need a stoma. What are your first thoughts about that? Personally, I think it depends on the situation. Research also suggests that people with a permanent stoma adapt better than those who have one temporarily. I’ve had so many different feelings and emotions about having an ostomy throughout my journey with IBD; positive and negative. What causes a Jpouch to fail?

Jpouches are complicated! They're created out of loops of small intestine being cut and stitched back together, to create a storage area to replace the rectum. Basically, the small intestine is doing a job that it was never intended to do. Why does a Jpouch failure happen? There are many reasons that a Jpouch might be deemed a failure. It can be a mechanical malfunction, which might mean that it has folded over, twisted, or has narrowings, which means it can’t be emptied properly or causes waste to back up. Sometimes, it’s the structure, so it might not be able to hold enough volume, which results in constantly needing to empty, urgently. How and why I got back into exercise after stoma surgery

A stoma alone should not prevent you from exercising. Although, the condition which led to having your stoma might limit it a little! For me, it’s really important to keep active, but I am by no means an incredibly active person. I know I feel better with daily exercise than I do without it, but it took a long trial and error process to figure out the type of exercise and for what length of time, suited me.
